The Whitehall Mansion is one of the most breathtaking indoor-outdoor wedding venues in Louisville that I’ve had the pleasure of photographing weddings at. Every time I go, it feels like I’ve stepped back in time to an English countryside manor surrounded by colorful, blooming gardens. It was no different for Ava and Conner’s big day.
The couple spent their getting-ready moments and reception at Whitehall’s mansion and gardens, and it served us well even in the rainy, unpredictable weather. As a Kentucky photographer who’s been a part of many weddings, it’s hard to find a place that can cater to the region’s clouds one minute and sunshine the next—but Whitehall did just that.

The Whitehall Mansion started as something very humble: a two-story brick home in the Italian style built by John Marshall in 1855. Over the next two centuries, it would change many hands and transform into the Southern-style Greek Revival mansion it’s known as today, with wings on three sides, an iconic front portico with towering columns, and a circular driveway. One family even filled it with American and French antiques, adding to its charm. By 1992, the house and its surrounding gardens were bequeathed to the Historic Homes Foundation so the public could enjoy its elegance and centuries-spanning history.
Apart from the mansion, the 10-acre estate is surrounded by lush, expansive gardens, making it the perfect setting for an outdoor wedding ceremony or reception. There are four primary gardens around the property, each with its own unique touch:
The Garden Terrace is across from the Formal Garden and is another option for a ceremony or reception afterward, whether open-air or tented.
I’ve photographed many ceremonies and receptions at the Whitehall wedding venue, and I absolutely love it every time. The gardens outside photograph beautifully for a colorful, lush backdrop. And inside the mansion, vintage wallpaper, historic photos, art pieces, and golden chandeliers make the space feel like you’ve just stepped into an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice—it’s truly a magical place to say “I do.”

Ava and Connor decided to have their ceremony at the Cathedral of the Assumption in downtown Louisville, but before they exchanged vows (and after they said “I do”), they knew they wanted the historic Whitehall to be a part of their big day.
The couple spent the quiet hours of the morning getting ready in Whitehall’s many rooms. One room featured a dark wood canopy bed, floral wallpaper, and sheer curtains, giving it an almost 19th-century country manor quality. Another, where Ava put on her dress, was a whimsical, pattern-rich room filled with ornate details, antique-inspired furnishings, and layers of color. Every room was different, and each felt like a soft hug on a day the couple would never forget.
After capturing the slower getting-ready moments, the couple and the bridal party made their way to the Cathedral of the Assumption for a beautiful ceremony before coming back to Whitehall for a charming reception.
Ava and Conner went with soft blush pinks, corals, and lighter shades of orange for their reception decor. However, they didn’t need much because the surroundings were already beautiful. They hung up a canopy for the reception in the gardens, which came in handy due to the unpredictable weather that day—one minute it was pouring and the next the sun peeked out. But fortunately, the Whitehall wedding venue is the perfect place to accommodate rainy weather.
The day ended with celebrations, a champagne tower, the cutting of the cake, and a celebration of their union. And Whitehall held every moment delicately for a day they’ll look back on with fondness.

If you want a wedding like Ava and Conner’s, it’s quite easy to plan one at the Whitehall wedding venue. Couples often have a few questions about the venue before committing:
