Best Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement Locations

Sprague Lake

Sprague Lake is the most popular ceremony site inside Rocky Mountain National Park, and for good reason! The lake reflects the Continental Divide including Hallett Peak, Otis Peak, and Flattop Mountain, creating a stunning backdrop for vows and portraits. It is wheelchair-accessible and allows up to 30 guests. This is where Carmen and Kalab exchanged their vows.

Bear Lake

Bear Lake is one of the most iconic locations in all of Rocky Mountain National Park, with views of Longs Peak, Hallett Peak, and Thatchtop Mountain framing the small lake. In the fall, golden aspens glow on the north side of the lake, making it especially popular for October elopements. Note: Bear Lake’s parking lot fills quickly and may close. Plan to arrive early or use the park shuttle. Up to 10 guests allowed at this site.

Trail Ridge Road

One of the highest scenic drives in the United States with incredible panoramic views.
Trail Ridge Road soars above 12,000 feet and offers some of the most dramatic mountain views in all of Colorado. Ceremonies are not permitted directly on Trail Ridge Road, but it is a spectacular location for portrait sessions after your ceremony at a designated site. Note: Trail Ridge Road closes for winter, typically from mid-October through late May. Plan your elopement accordingly if you want this iconic backdrop in your photos!

How to Get a Rocky Mountain National Park Elopement Permit

A special use permit is required for weddings and elopements inside Rocky Mountain National Park.

The park has several designated ceremony locations with guest limits.

Here is what you need to know:

• Permit cost: $300 (non-refundable)
• Permits open one year in advance of your ceremony month
• The park issues a max of 60 permits per month (May through October) and 40 per month (November through April)
• Permits sell out fast!
• You must hold your ceremony at one of 13 designated sites (ceremonies anywhere else result in a fine)
• Maximum guest count: 30 (including photographer, officiant, and all vendors)
• Drones are prohibited
• No chairs, arches, tents, props, or decorations of any kind
• Dogs are not allowed at most ceremony sites
• Self-solemnization is allowed in Colorado, so a separate officiant is optional

Best Time of Year to Elope in Rocky Mountain National Park

Every season in Rocky Mountain National Park is stunning, but each offers a different experience:

Summer: alpine lakes and wildflowers

Wildflowers, warm temperatures, and long golden hour windows. Trail Ridge Road is open. The most popular season, so book your permit early. Sunrise and weekday elopements offer the most privacy.

Fall: golden aspens and crisp mountain air

The most magical time to elope in RMNP. Aspens turn golden, elk rut season brings incredible wildlife sightings, and the light is incredible. Permits sell out earliest for this season.

Winter: snowy mountain landscapes

Snow-covered peaks and frozen alpine lakes make elopements incredibly dramatic and private. Fewer crowds, more permit availability, and cozy Estes Park cabin vibes. Requires layering and winter-ready attire.

For the best light and the most privacy, consider a sunrise or sunset elopement on a weekday.
